Investigation of the trobological performance of surfaces with
microstructure (LST) operating in the elastohydrodynamic regime |
|
Abstract: |
Experimental
investigation of the influence of surface microstructure (Laser
Surface Texturing – LST) on the capability of the surfaces to
transit from mixed film to full film lubrication regime, using a
two-disc test rig and employing electric contact resistance (ECR)
measurement techniques. Different versions of texturing were
compared to un-textured surfaces, utilizing electrical potential
measurements, in order to identify if the two surfaces are
completely separated by EHD film or if there are asperities
collisions. A new methodology for the determination of the metallic
contact area (direct metal-to-metal contact without the presence of
single-molecule lubricant film or oxides layer) was proposed and
tested. Results showed that under the operating conditions tested,
LST may enhance the capability of the surfaces to transit from mixed
film to full film lubrication regime. The result depends strongly on
the operating conditions and the geometrical characteristics of LST. |
